While nutrition experts push for healthy eating, it is easier said than done. The simple fact is that healthy cooked food is expensive and not within the reach of a large number of people. Most restaurants do not have ready cooked food but instead will cook it on order, which takes 30-45 minutes. With these two major reasons in mind, many people find it easier to turn to fast food that is cheap and readily available.
Why would you prefer a fast food diet?
There is no denying that fast food tastes goods. The spicy and salty flavours of a deep-fried chicken drumstick is one that few people can resist. Or the delicious sugary taste of a black forest cake.
A breakfast meal of sausage burrito and coffee will cost you less than $2.50 at MacDonald’s. Go there for a lunch of 2 cheeseburgers, medium French fries and a soft drink for $2. A dinner meal of 10 pieces chicken nuggets, medium fries, and a soft drink would cost $4.49. The total for the day would come to less than $10.
If you have a 30-minutes lunch break, it would be hard for you to wait for a meal to cook and eat at a leisurely pace. On the other hand, you can walk into a fast foods restaurant and make your purchase in less than 3 minutes. You can have it packed and eat on the go.
But getting used to a fast food diet comes with a number of drawbacks:
• High-calorie load
Fast foods contain a high content of sugar and fat that come with high-calorie counts. A meal of bacon cheeseburger and large fries carry a calorie count of 2300 calories. The average adult requires 2000 calories per day. Having several fast food meals a day will easily double the calories needed. The excess is stored as fat, which is why it is so easy to add weight when on a fast food diet.
• Food additives
Additives like Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) are used to add flavour to fast foods but have been found to have considerable health risks including cancer.
Is there a middle ground?
Those who have proven that you can lose weight on a fast food diet have done it by observing moderation. This is picking fast food items that are of a low calorie count. They also exercised as recommended. It is important to remember the mechanics of losing weight. You should use more calories than you take in. Observe this principle and lose weight while enjoying your favourite delicacies.
